Solder & Saw & Bezel 101. 11-4PM, Sundays TBD

In this once a week, 5-week course, we will begin with the fundamentals of metal, hammers, ergonomics, techniques for success, safety, metal types and properties, hand tools, as well as more advanced tools. We will learn how to solder and saw and work with Sterling Silver and base metals (brass and copper). We will then move onto the popular stone setting technique of bezel setting. This class includes an extensive overview of all the foundational and fundamentals of working with metal, aka being a metalsmith. We will work with the jewelers saw to create depth and imagery to metal pieces that will be soldered. We will use a variety of torches, soldering surfaces, types of solder, saw blades, and metal combinations. We will learn various soldering techniques and when to use them to succeed at bringing your own designs to fruition. We will learn various texturing techniques, cutting tools, and forming techniques such as dapping, disc cutters, hammering, stamping, work hardening , gauges, planning and design methods. We will plan our pieces, build on them, and use finishing techniques such as filing, sanding, flexshaft attachments, polishing, and create our own findings such as jump rings and ear wires. We will go in depth into beginning to set stones and each person will complete multiple finished. professional quality pieces you can be proud to say, "thanks, I made it!". When you complete this course you will gain an understanding of metalsmithing techniques, how to achieve the design you would like, and the beginner knowledge to better understand where you will go from here and what you want to make next!
All materials are included in the class fee except for the cabochon stones we use for bezel setting. Each person will get sterling silver, brass, and copper sheet and wire to use for their projects. Cabochon stones will be for sale but everything else is included in the class fee.
When enrolled in classes and/or a member of The Metal Smithery, you will receive your own discount code for buying tools and supplies at Rio Grande and locally at The Jewelers Source.
There will be a beginners kit available to purchase from The Jewelers Source as well.
Please wear clothing that can get dirty and/or ripped. Please do not wear tops with loose or flowy sleeves, and no dangly pieces on clothing or jewelry. Hair should be out of your face. Closed-toed shoes are mandatory.
