carve and cast sterling silver with stones cast in place. TBD March
Hello! PLEASE NOTE: If you would like to have this class happen sooner than March, and can meet on a Monday- please be in touch!
You will be instructed and lead through each step but your design will be your own. We will use sterling silver and various hard gemstones that can withstand the high heat of molten metal. Everything will be provided except the stones, so that you can further customize your piece when you choose your own stones, which you can either bring yourself or you can purchase from us here. The best size stones to use are between 2MM - 5MM faceted stones. Please note if bringing your own stones: Due to the extreme heat pressure put on the stones during the casting period, the only stones that will survive are: diamonds, rubies, sapphires, garnets, or CZ stones.
We will be using the cast in place method for the stones which means we first place the stones where we want them and then we pour the molten metal into the mold which will fill around the stones, securing them in place as the metal cools and hardens. Please note - there is a lot of cleanup with sand casting if you want to remove the sand grain and stones can and will often move a bit so depending on the size of the stone, there will be fluctuations in outcomes. We will try our hardest to make your ring just as you envision it though! This method works best with solid shapes and textures, as opposed to the lost wax casting method with which you can add much more fine detail.
We will carve our own small pieces like rings or pendants out of hard waxes, create the sand mold, place the stones, melt the Sterling Silver and pour the molten metal into the mold. We will then do all of the finishing - sawing, sanding, filing, and polishing.
Class minimum is 3, and maximum is 4.
This class is open to adults.
Please wear clothing that can get dirty and/or ripped. Nothing too flown that will get in the way of your own safety and closed toed shoes are mandatory.
